Dumb Dog & New Growth

Posted on October 9, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Well, this afternoon, Julia and I were in the far back pasture that we call the “P”. (Our property is shaped like the letter P with a small overgrown section that is up by the creek). We were looking if there was a way down to the creek, looking to see if we could get some goats back there to clean it up and make it more usable. We had left Talbot in the back yard.

I noticed that Talbot’s barks seemed louder that we thought they should be. I walked over so I could see the front pastures and noticed that Talbot was chasing the boys. I called Lilian who was in the house and she ran out and got Talbot out of the pasture. He listened right away, and we thought all was going well. As we were walking up the pasture from the back pasture we noticed one section of the fence had been knocked up and pulled out a little. So we checked on the boys, and Rogue had a little blood on his neck and Zach had some blood on his nose. We got the boys in the barn, and took a close look at them. Zach had run in the fence and cut his nose a little and we got that cleaned up. Put some neosporin on it. The blood on Rogue was from Zach, he wasn’t hurt at all. We called the vet, and he said we were doing everything right, and to call him tomorrow if things didn’t get better or of they got worse.

We have the boys in the barn right now so they can be there overnight. We’ll let them out in the morning.

The good news is there is a LOT of new growth of grass in all the pastures and in our yard. This rain is turning our pastures green again. It is good to see. The alpacas will like all this new growth, and will hopefully start eating more in the pasture and less hay.

Night of Firsts!

Posted on September 9, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Well, tonight was a night of firsts, and not a night of good firsts.  While I was in here working on the blog, Julia and her sister were out with the alpacas talking with our neighbor.  She has 2 dogs, and are fairly well trained dogs.  Well, her oldest dog got away from her, went down to the ditch, and came over to our property and started chasing the three boys.  She was able to separate the boys, and started chasing Rogue.  Julia, Becca and our neighbor tried to catch the dog but she was too fast.  She was able to bite Rogue on the back leg, and caused Rogue to run in to a fence.  Well, our neighbor got the dog and Julia and Becca got the alpacas in the barn.  The girls came in and told me they needed help, and I went out to help Julia look at Rogue and see if he was ok.

I caught him, and Julia started checking him out.  He seemes to be doing ok.  They are all nervous now, and really don’t want to eat right now.

The 2nd first tonight is while Julia and I were checking out Rogue, Rogue turned his head and spit at Julia right in the face.  A direct hit!!!  BULLSEYE!!  9 A WINNER!!!  BINGO!!!  SPOT ON!!!  DEAD CENTER!!!  Just to let you know, alpaca spit STINKS!!!  Thank goodness that Julia closed her eyes and mouth.

We got everybody calmed down, and Julia went in to take a LONG shower, and everybody seems to be doing ok.  I’m going to go check on the boys later to see how they are doing.

Happy Dogs!!

We’ve taken our dogs (Talbot & Bandit) down to the property a couple of times now while we have had open houses here in Eugene. All I can say is that the dogs are going to be MORE than happy to move. When we let them out in the back yard, they can’t stop running. They LOVE IT!!

Talbot just runs back in forth in pure extacy, and just doesn’t want to stop. Bandit explores every new smell and sight. There are a couple of places he really likes. One is over by the chicken coop (he looks part fox, maybe he is looking for the chickens). I may need to keep him out of sight of the chickens when we get some.

I think the dogs are the most happy with the move. They are getting a HUGE fenced back yard that they will be able to take over. They will be the kings of the back yard!!

Now we only need to worry about how they are towards the alpacas. We can only hope that they don’t just sit at the back windows barking at the huge creatures near their kingdom!! argh
